Cinema in Arkendale - Celebrating le Tour de France - "A Day Out" and "Velorama"
Arkendale Community Hall, 7.30pm
A Day Out - Alan Bennett's first television play, directed in black and white in 1972 by Stephen Frears. A charming comedy set in Edwardian Yorkshire, it follows a cycling club on a day out.
In 1911, a Halifax cycling club has a day trip to the ruins of Fountains Abbey, on the way discussing their lives and concerns, blithely unaware of what will happen to them and their country over the next few years. The most telling example of the latter comes when Boothroyd explains why there will never be another war, as the play is set three years before World War I cut swathes through a generation - and, as the 1919 coda implies, many of the club's members as well. It features a fantastic cast including Brian Glover, who was still a professional wrestler at the time, and Paul Shane, who was then a club comic.
Velorama - celebrates the Century of the Bicycle, made by Leeds based filmmaker Daisy Asquith with BFI and Yorkshire Film Archive footage.
Created using over 100 different titles from the BFI National Archive (including footage from Mitchell & Kenyon, Topical Budget, COI and British Council), and footage from the amateur and home movie collections housed at the Yorkshire Film Archive, it shows a Century of the Bicycle on film, from the invention of the modern bike to the gruelling pursuit of Le Tour, all set to dreamy electronic music by Bill Nelson and the legendary Yorkshire tones of Chumbawumba. Velorama will take you on an unmissable two-wheeled journey.
These films are presented in partnership with Sheffield Doc/Fest and Cine Yorkshire as part of Tour De Cinema in the Yorkshire Festival, the first ever arts festival to precede the Tour de France, the world's biggest annual sporting event.
Tour de Cinema was commissioned by Yorkshire Festival 2014 with support from Arts Council England, Yorkshire Water, Welcome to Yorkshire and Yorkshire Local Authorities.
£5 admission, pay on the door. Sound enhanced by Hearing Loop facility. There will be a bar with drinks, refreshments and ices on sale during the evening - opens 7.00pm.

This showing will be Philomena - based on a true story about an elderly Irish woman searching for the toddler son she gave up for adoption as an unwed teen living in a convent. Most of its pleasures come from the way it confounds expectations.
From its odd-couple partnering of the usually stately Judi Dench and acerbic jester Steve Coogan (also co-writer and producer) to its remarkable cliché-avoiding yet still-emotional conclusion, the movie defies pigeonholing. What appears to be a simple sob fest eventually reveals itself to be a multi-faceted affair: part buddy comedy built upon class distinctions, part road trip adventure, and even part intriguing mystery.
£5 admission, pay on the door. Sound enhanced by Hearing Loop facility. There will be a bar with drinks, refreshments and ices on sale during the evening - opens 7.00pm.

Wednesday 21st May
| The Thankful Village - an original comedy-drama by Kate Bramley with music by Jez Lowe.
Staveley Village Hall, 7.30pm.
Presented by Badapple Theatre.
Set against the backdrop of World War I, the quiet village backwater of Bottledale is changed forever by the advent of the Great War in Europe. But the roll of honour stone in the village square remains empty and un-etched as the years pass, and folk start to wonder. This is a story of hope, humour and humanity, about the men who went away, and the women left behind, and the eccentric twists and turns of daily life that led to their re-uniting, for better or for worse, in the winter of 1918. The thankful villages were those that lost no men in the Great War because all those who left to serve came home again, and there were some 52 settlements in England and Wales that could claim this honor at the end of the conflict.
