March 2011 Tasting Notes - Fantastic Wines Under £5.99

La Grille Pinot Noir- 2010

 France  Pinot Noir - 12%
St. Porcain
£5.99 - Majestic Wine
This fruit-filled rosé is made from Pinot Noir grapes grown on the stony foothills of the Massif Central. It was cool-fermented to catch the grapes' fresh fruit, full of the fresh strawberry and spice flavours so typical of this great variety. This soft, subtle rosé displays nuances of strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant and loganberry and is light in body, leaving a crisp refreshing finish. Serve chilled as an apéritif or as a delicious match for sushi, salads and chargrilled salmon steaks.
Quinta de Azevedo Vinho Verde - 2009

 Portugal  Loureiro, Pederna - 11%
Minho
£5.49 - Majestic Wine
Literally 'green wine' from the Minho region of Northern Portugal. Historically fermented in open stone lagares before being run off into cask and undergoing malolactic fermentation. Fermentation now occurs in vat, retaining the classic spritz or CO2 bubble in the wine. Complex aromas of white and tropical fruits, citrus and white flowers. A lively and stimulating wine, with good acidity and well balanced, hints of spritz and bubble, with a concentrated and fresh finish. At its best now, as a partner to seafood, green salads and pasta.
Laurent Miquel L'Artisan - 2009

 France  Chardonnay - 13%
Pays d'Oc
£5.99 - Majestic Wine
Laurent Miquel is the eighth generation winemaker in this family estate, which has made wines in the Languedoc since 1791. This wine is made by careful blending of a number of separately-vinified cuvées, both oaked and unoaked, to balance freshness and complexity. Complex aromas of honeydew melon, pear and grapefruit dominate the nose, which continues on the palate in a cascade of citrus and stone fruit flavours, along with a touch of oaky creaminess. A delight to drink on its own, or with spicy Thai or Indonesian cuisine
Concho y Toro Late Harvest - 2006

 Chile  Sauvignon Blanc - 12%
Maule Valley
£5.99 (half bottle) - Majestic Wine
This is Concha y Toro's first dessert wine, and it is a wonderful effort. Golden yellow with amber tones, this sumptuous wine displays ripe papaya, peach and honey aromas. The palate is light, fresh and fruity with a long, subtle, honeyed finish
Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages - 2009

 France  Gamay - 13%
Beaujolais
£6.49 - Majestic Wine
This wine comes from the 39 superior villages of Beaujolais and is a triumphant blend by master winemaker Duboeuf. Packed with juicy fruit, this is extremely gluggable.
Ravenswood Vintner's Blend - 2007

 U.S.A.  Zinfandel- 13.5%
Central Valley, California
£4.99 - Majestic Wine
From the self proclaimed 'King of Zin' comes this perfectly crafted, gutsy blend, made from 84% Zinfandel. Aged for 12 months in 100% French oak, this is a superb quality wine at an almost unheard-of low price. With powerful aromas of raspberry, black cherry and spicy hints of oak, the palate is well balanced with supple tannins and a long fruit forward finish
Château Guiot - 2009

 France  Grenache, Syrah - 13.5%
Costières de Nîmes
£5.99 - Majestic Wine
Costières de Nîmes has more in common with the Rhône across the river than it does with the wines of Languedoc immediately neighbouring it. Château Guiot lies just outside the city of Nîmes, in the heart of this appellation. Deep purple hue, a beautifully scented nose with herby aromas, lashings of juicy forest fruits and spicy, rich berry flavours on the palate and a good, smooth finish. Equally good with anything from shepherds pie, meatballs or moussaka style vegetarian dishes.
Castillo Establés Gran Reserva - 2002

 Spain  Tempranillo - 13%
La Mancha
£5.99 - Majestic Wine
The wines of La Mancha follow the style of Rioja but for a fraction of the price. 100% Tempranillo with 30 months ageing in American oak barrels, a complex nose shows bramble and cherry fruit blending with vanilla, nutmeg and clove from the oak. Velvety smooth texture displaying dried red fruits and a subtle spiciness which will make it marry well with pasta and asian dishes
Grande Archèche Chardonnay - 2009

 France  Chardonnay - 13.5%
Pays des Coteaux de l'Ardèche
£7.99 - Majestic Wine
The climate in the Ardèche, to the west of Rhône, certainly suits Chardonnay. Couple this terroir with Louis Latour's Burgundian expertise and the result is in the style of Meursault. It is treated as if it were grown in one of the Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte-d'Or. Yellow-green in colour, with a subtle nose of vanilla. On the palate there are ripe apple and peach fruits with a nutty, buttery creamy texture and notes of vanilla and spice. A powerful and complex wine. Try with roast chicken and dauphinoise potatoes
Carignan Vieilles Vignes - 2009

 France  Carignan - 12.5%
Pays de l'Hérault
£4.99 - Majestic Wine
An indigenous grape variety of the Languedoc, Carignan produces dark ruby red wines with plenty of body, and are said to be a great expression of the rugged heathland terroirs close to the medieval city of Carcassonne. This example from Alain Grignon is harvested from vines aged around 40 years old, with the low yields of the old vines allowing the grapes to develop great intensity of flavour. Dark ruby red in colour, this wine is crammed with inky berry and cherry fruit, with a hint of vanilla on the nose from a touch of oak ageing
