January 2012 Tasting Notes - South American Wines

Undurraga Rosé NV

 Chile  Pinot Noir

The grapes for this wine are grown in Undurraga's Codigua Estate. Situated along the Maipo river, behind the Leyda Valley. Cool temperatures here create an ideal environment for producing Pinot Noir of delicate colour and fresh acidity, perfect for sparkling rosé.
Delicate watermelon pink, and with subtle aromas of cherries, strawberries and flower petals. Persistent, uniform bubbles and zesty acidity provide an uplifting palate. Great for parties, as an aperitif, or with lightly spicy chicken skewers.
Crios de Susana Balbo Torrontes, Cafayate - 2011

 Argentina  Torrontes

Many see Torrontes as the Argentine white variety with the greatest potential. It is characterful with a light body and high acidity. These acidity levels make it ideally suited to the arid growing conditions of Argentina.
Viogmer-like aromas of ripe, juicy peaches and blossom develop on the palate, which is surprisingly full-bodied and crisp for a wine with such delicate aromas. Fruity, floral and yet still quite dry. This wine makes a wonderful aperitif but can also be enjoyed with seafood, smoked meats and medium to strong-flavoured cheeses
Viu Manent Reserve Viognier, Colchagua - 2011

Harvested from Viu Manent's San Carlo vineyard in Cunaco, Colchagua Valley. Made without oak and cold-fermented, this Viognier has been made with fresh primary fruit characters in mind. with 2 month's lees ageing adding a dash of depth and texture.
Bright vibrant yellow in colour, displaying aromas of quince. pineapple and apricot. The palate is a cascade of tropical fruit, peach and pear flavours, soft acidity and light texture. Matches well with fruity savoury dishes: try with a mild chicken tagine with ginger, chilli and apricots.
Montes Alpha Chardonnay, Casablanca Valley - 2010

Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray founded Vine Montes to pursue the making of premium wines in Chile. Barrel fermented using a mixture of Burgundian and native yeasts this Chardonnay is matured in French oak for 12 months.
Aromas of banana and pineapple on the nose, with upfront mango and passionfruit on the palate, complemented by a buttery, creamy character to the palate. Hints of toffee on the after taste. Rich and fruity Chardonnays like this can work quite well with spicy dishes, and are classic partners to poultry in creamy sauces.
Tabali Reserva Pinot Noir, Limari Valley - 2010

Award-winning winernaker Felipe Muller makes this wine entirely from grapes grown on Tabali's unique and revered river terrace vineyard. Hand-picked Into small baskets to prevent damage, the grapes are bunch-selected, de-stemmed and fermented under temperature control
A benchmark cool-climate Pinot with a fresh and elegant raspberry and cherry nose, with hints of vanilla. Tannins and acidity work in perfect harmony on the palate, which is at once rounded and taut. Drink with smoked and cured meats, soft cheese, or duck dishes.
Koyle Reserva Carrnenere, Alto Colchagua - 2009

 Chile  Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah

This is a blend of 85% Carrnenere, complemented by small amounts of Cabernet and Syrah, from hand-harvested vineyards in Colchagua. The wine undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation, then 60% is aged in French oak for 12 months before reblending.
Achieving a happy balance between youthful fruit and savoury undertones, this wine is at once lively, supple, smooth and rich, with notes of blackberry, red peppers and spice on the finish. Drink now or keep for up to 5 years. Enjoy with cured meats or well-seasoned steak.
Vinalba Reserva Malbec, Mendoza - 2009

The Malbec Reserva from the Vinalba estate has previously won a Decanter award for its quality. Sourced from vineyards at the foot of the Andes, grown at different altitudes to achieve the perfect balance between tannin and acidity.
This wine literally wraps itself around every corner of your mouth with its ripe dark plum fruits, sweet tannins and dark chocolate and mocha. Flavours linger for a long time. A full-bodied wine, yet with juicy tannins, this wine is best enjoyed with food. Peppered steak or lamb are ideal companions.
