May 2012 Tasting Notes - Waitrose Wines

Sean Anthony Windsor - Waitrose, Harrogate

Cederberg Waitrose Foundation Chenin Blanc - 2009/10

South Africa  Chenin Blanc - 13%
£7.99
A deliciously fruity Chenin Blanc from one of the Cape's most dramatic vineyards. This wine is produced, as is the Shiraz in the same range, in partnership with Cederberg Wine farm, with money from each bottle sold supporting community projects chosen by the farm workers and their families. It's fresh and dry, with aromas and flavours of peach and lime.
Villa Maria 2011 Marlborough - 2011

New Zealand  Sauvignon Blanc - 13%
£8.99
Not all Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs taste the same. We challenged Alastair Mating MW, Villa Maria's chief winemaker, to produce one that harked back to the minerally sancerre style with complexity and restraint. He has produced this exceptional food wine, Gooseberry and citrus flavours abound, with some smoky, stony character on the finish. It complements asparagus, chicken or goat's cheese dishes.
Cave Des Vignerons De Chablis - 2010

 France  Chardonnay - 12.5%
£10.49
We teamed up with the well-respected Cave des Vignerons de Chablis because of their access to excellent fruit and the expertise of winemaker David Delaye. Dry and crisp, with depth of fresh citrus fruit flavour, it picks up a subtle minerality from the soil, which contains ancient marine fossils. The complexity of flavours will develop as the wine ages, and it's perfect served lightly chilled, alongside seafood, fish or white meat dishes. Really refreshing and beautifully balanced.
Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, Vina Valdivieso, Maipo Valley - 2009

 Chile  Cabernet Sauvignon - 14%
£9.99
This is an excellent, rich and full-flavoured Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Chile's best areas for reds, favoured for its distinguished soils, high summer temperatures yet cooling mountain breezes. This wine is made by the skilled team at Valdivieso; it shows deliciously pure and succulent blackcurrent flavours with smoky notes and subtle hints of vanilla. Enjoy with moussaka or roasted red peppers.
Cune, Cerro De La Mesa - Crianza, Rioja - 2008

 Spain  Tempranillo - 13.5%
£9.99
A wine with lovely raspberry, damson and sloe fruit flavours, streaks of fine, toasty vanilla and ripe tannins. This is an excellent Rioja Crianza made from 100% Tempranillo grapes by winemaker Chema Ryan, from Vina Real in partnership with Waitrose. Cune has a great reputation for making elegant Riojas and this one would be a fine match for a hearty lamb casserole.
Reserve Shiraz, St Hallett - Barossa Valley - 2009

 Australia  Shiraz - 14.5%
£9.99
With ripe red and black fruit flavours, hints or spice and a smooth chocolately oaky finish, this is a vibrant and rich red. It is made from 100% Shiraz grapes by Waitrose in partnership with renowned Barossa valley winery St Hallett, and blended with the Waitrose wine buyer to reflect the definitive nature of Barossa Valley Shiraz.
Sanleo Prosecco Brut Nv - 2009/10

 Italy  Prosecco - 11%
£8.99
Prosecco is a very popular Italian sparkling wine loved in Venice and enjoyed all over the world. Its aromatic Bouquet, fresh fruity flavour and gentle mousse make it an ideal aperitif for parties and celebrations. Enjoy with Italian breadsticks and parma ham or add some fresh peach juice to create a delicious bellini cocktail. Also great with panettone.
