REFUSE AND RECYCLING - Collections are made on alternate Monday mornings. Garden waste is collected on Friday mornings.

  • Recycling: Brown wheelie bins for garden waste, black boxes for glass jars, bottles, food and drink cans, food and drink cartons, empty aerosol cans, tubs and trays (ie yogurt pots, plastic tubs, margarine tubs), tin foil, plastic bottles, blue bags for paper and cardboard.
  • Non-recycling refuse: Black wheelie bins for all other waste.

The nearest council tip for general waste and recycling is at Wetherby Road, Harrogate, HG3 1DE. Open every day except Wednesdays (apart from Christmas, Boxing and New Years Days). April - September 08.30 to 17.00, October - March 08.30 to 16.00

There are some recycling skips at Morrisons, Boroughbridge. Amenity skips are also available in Back Lane car park, Boroughbridge, on the second Saturday of every month from 9am to 1pm.

BT TELEPHONE BOX - No longer functional - east side of Moor Lane, south of the church. It has been adopted by the village for other purposes.

POST BOX (collections 9.00am Monday-Friday, 7.00am Saturday) - next to the telephone box. Deliveries are usually mid-morning. A later collection, c. 4.00pm, is made at Marton-cum-Grafton.

DEFIBRILLATOR - The nearest community unit is located on the exterior wall of the Blue Bell Inn, Arkendale. In an emergency it can be accessed by dialling 999 to obtain the code from the Ambulance Service, and following the instructions on the equipment and the Ambulance Service operator. Any queries about the defibrillator, or to report its use, please contact defib@arkendale.org.uk

MOBILE LIBRARY - This service has now ceased. The nearest public libraries are in Boroughbridge and Knaresborough. If you have difficulty getting to a library or carrying books, or are a carer, you may be eligible for the home library service. For details see: NYCC Libraries webpage.

ELECTRICITY - in the event of a power cut Northern Powergrid, who provide electrical power to Yorkshire, have a priority register for those with special needs.

INTERNET - high speed fibre broadband is now available in Arkendale. The Choose ISP service may help with a better deal, but the underlying speeds will be common to all providers.

SHOPS - The nearest is Spellow's at Marton cum Grafton (village shop and post office). Otherwise there are shops in Boroughbridge or Knaresborough. Morrisons supermarket in Boroughbridge, Co-op, Lidl, Sainsbury Local and Tesco Express in Knaresborough.

MARKETS - Knaresborough market day is Wednesday, Ripon market day is Thursday. A farmers' market is held in Harrogate on the 2nd Thursday of each month.

POST OFFICES - at Marton cum Grafton, Boroughbridge and Knaresborough

DOCTORS, DENTISTS AND VETS - Can be found in Boroughbridge or Knaresborough.

POLICE - Nearest station is Knaresborough. Call 999 for emergencies, and 101 for non-emergency reporting and enquiries. See the Neighbourhood Watch page for more information about community policing.

COMMUNITY AND ADULT EDUCATION - The Community Education Offices can advise on classes available in villages and at their centres: Boroughbridge (01423 325165) and Knaresborough (01423 866061).
